So after reading both Lexie and Cathy's lovely posts on their college life I decided that since I had a little extra time I would let the world know how I was doing. I must admit that when I first committed to going to Miami I was totally terrified but I've actually gone through the transition really well. I was afraid that I would lose contact with friends back home but I swear there are some of you kids that I talk to more now that I am 13 hours away then I did before. Plus for some reason I was really afraid that I had someone forgot how to make friends. Man was I wrong... I have made so many really great friends here that it truly amazes me. There are a ton of people down here that remind me of all you guys back home and that share similar personalities but then there are other people down here that I have just never met anyone like and that is so cool. Especially alot of the latino population which sadly I have always be skeptical of due wolf calls from walking down the street but now I have a bunch of really great friends that are from all over latin america. (I guess thats good since its my major and all haha) I'm just glad to know that although everyone back home is great and amazing there are more people out there that are equally great. That brings me to the biggest and posibiliy most surprising thing I have done down here and thats joining a sorority. At first I only intended to go through the intiation process so that I could meet people without having to "buy my friends" which is kind of the perspective I've always held about greek life. Well I am now a proud sister (although not formally inducted) of Delta Delta Delta. The atmosphere of a sorority is really not what I expected at all. I mean the things you see on tv and the things you read about, the gossip you hear it just isn't true. I mean I'm not going to lie we do like to party but I now have a whole network of pre-med sisters that can help any time that I am stressing out and help me to pick the teachers that are most beneficial to taking my MCATs and all that great stuff. Plus I got my Big last week and I think she is just about the greatest person I have met down here and let me tell you she spoils me absolutely rotten. (I heart you Ellie!!!) Basically if you are possibliy contemplating rushing a sorority I would totally say to go for it because I did and I know its not something that I will regret. Asides from that there are so many other activities offered here that I just can't decide what to do. I am already in SalsaCraze which is taught by people who actually learned salsa in latin america so it is totally different then anything I have ever done before. Plus I'm going to do this really great program called Project Sunshine where we get to go to the local children's hospital, which is actually on campus, and go through like a Big Sister/Big Brother program for kids that going to be in the clinics for an extended period of time. Now those two activities aside I need some input... there are a couple other groups and organizations that I'm looking at but I don't want to take to much on so I think I can only really do one of these. Should I do DanceFusion (basically like hiphop dance team) Scuba or the Surfclub? These are obviously all just for fun and aren't a serious commitment so if I have alot of homework or studying I can miss the meetings. But yeah tell me what you think To any underclassmen who are reading this and think your teachers are lying when they tell you that you will have alot more homework in college they are NOT LYING!!! I have never had so much work in my entire life. It kind of feels like constantly studying for an AP test so yeah get use to it guys. The really cool thing though is that I don't really have any "required" courses so all my classes are really interesting to me so I love them all. Oh yeah and if you have the oppurtunity to take physics I would highly recommend it cause I am going to be screwed and have to get tutoring next semester haha So yeah even though the course work is pretty demanding its actually really interesting and I almost carry on an educated conversation about Latin America in spanish cause I know so many people from places like Equador and Cuba and such. Yeah so I think that pretty much sums up my life right now... its absolutely crazy but its totally amazing too. Oh wait I had one more question to ask you guys. So with my major I get to travel abroad basically every summer and/or winter if I want to so where do you guys think I should go? These are my options... Equador Chile Cuba Costa Rica Spain (again?) Rhwanda Love and miss you all!!! |
